Earthworm Digestive System
How the Earthworm Digests Food
1. Ingests: The earthworm can feed on plant matter, mud, clay and dirt.(1)
2. Digestion: The mouth is where the food enters and it goes through the pharynx. The pharynx pushes the food through the esophagus. Then the food is stored in the crop, which is the stomach of the earthworm, until it moves through the gizzard where its going to be flatten to expand the surface area. This makes it more available
to absorb the nutrients.(1)
3. Excretion: The waste from the food exits from the anus of the earthworm.
